Songs We Carry
Beautiful and deeply moving...their performance summoned such sorcery within seconds of starting, andthe thrills kept coming.” - The Arts Desk☆☆☆☆☆
Songs We Carry is a joint project by British Jewish singer and multi-instrumentalist Ana Silvera and Palestinian oud player and singer Saied Silbak. The project focuses on finding common intersections of their cultural traditions—the emotive, melancholic Ladino (Judeo-Spanish) songs Ana selected from her family history, and the rich maqams and delicately woven melodies of Arabic music that Saied brings from his artistic tradition. Ana Silvera comes from a family of Sephardic Jews, and her work often links ancient tradition with expressions of contemporary songwriting. Saied Silbak was born in Shafaa’mr in the Lower Galilee in Palestine. His musical education combines Arab, Turkish, and Indian influences with elements of Western music. The duo met in London and created a project that is not merely a fusion of styles but, above all, a dialogue, a narrative, and a sharing of cultural stories.
Their repertoire interweaves traditional Ladino songs with ancient Arabic compositions, often recomposed or arranged for the contemporary stage. It is meditative, deeply emotive music that continually shifts between melancholy and hope. The album Songs We Carry, released in autumn 2024, received positive reviews. The launch concert at London’s famed Kings Place sold out in no time and was reviewed as follows (critic Mark Kidel of The Arts Desk): “... their presence on stage, and the harmony that binds them, is in itself a declaration of love and humanity.”
